Sticky: Mal Durrish Information

Basic Information

Name: Mal Durrish
Affiliation: New Republic, Jedi Order (Formerly: Empire Reborn)
Age: 26-28 (Suspected)
Occupation: Jedi Knight. (Formerly: Reborn Warrior, previous to that a pilot with the Imperial Army, flying DX-9 Stormtrooper transports)
Canon: Star Wars (Expanded Universe)

Note for Etraya Players: Mal's history alternates: she has no close personal attachment to either Kyle Katarn or Jan Ors.

Potted History:

Born into poverty as an orphan on Nar Shaddaa, Mal lied about her age to enroll in the Imperial Army, ultimately participating in a number of campaigns against the Galactic Alliance and, after the Battle of Endor, the New Republic. Ultimately ended up in the Remnant faction that aligned with Hethrir and, then, Desann and Galak Fyyar.

As 'surplus', Mal was chosen to be taken to the Valley of the Jedi on Ruusan - a wellspring of the Force, and artificially imbued with Force powers. Now one of Desann's 'Reborn', her anger and indoctrination were set loose as an assassin and high level operative. After the Empire Reborn's defeat, Mal was tracked down by Jedi Master Kyle Katarn and defeated - but spared.

After extensive time in a bacta tank, and a great deal of counselling by Katarn and Master Skywalker, Mal accepted apprenticeship in the Jedi Order - ultimately holding the line alongside Jaden Korr and others in defeating the Cult of Ragnos led by Desann's erstwhile apprentice, Tavion Axmis.

Newly-minted Jedi Knight as a result of all this.

Personality:

Her early life shaped by want and poverty, Mal's early personality was shaped by her service under the auspices of the Empire. The constant propaganda, as well as combat missions, deeply inculcated Imperial ideology. Her service alongside the Imperial Stormtroopers she transported to and from missions furthered this - she never saw them as the masked visage of the Imperial iron fist, but as her comrades in arms. And all the while, the strain of combat operations took its toll - the loss of friends, the death and destruction - and being shot down twice by Rebel/Republic forces and the extensive healing required each time.

Like so many Imperials, Mal found herself part of the fracturing of the Empire after Endor, another difficult experience as Imperial power splintered and collapsed. The failure of subsequent campaigns to restore that power (The Thrawn Campaign, the Reborn Emperor's offensives) furthered a festering feeling of helplessness and rage.

It was these factors that had her plucked from her service career for the Empire Reborn's Ruusan program. Desaan sensed the dark feelings that were beginning to dominate her name - and then poured the sudden presence of the Force into her head, which nearly shattered her sanity. The sudden rush of power and connection to the larger galaxy created a cackling, barely controlled monster.

Her subsequent use as an assassin and operative made her into a remorseless killing machine - until she met Kyle Katarn. Katarn's own experience as a former Imperial was instrumental in understanding and defeating her - and then patiently working to redeem her to the light.

So who is Mal, currently? A woman deeply ashamed of what she once was, actively seeking redemption for what she still considers her crimes. There are hopeful glimmers of normalcy, but overall she is still quiet, slow to engage and slower to trust. Prefers solitude to company on all fronts. She also has a issues with her own status - thinking herself a 'knock-off' Jedi, owing to her being artificially infused with Force abilities.

(Note: Desann and Galak Fyyar chose people with minimal Force-sensitivity for their experiments. Before being taken through the Valley of the Jedi, Mal would have glimpses of the Force, but never enough to be trained under any of the Force-wielder traditions.)

On the positive side, she has a very healthy relationship with her mentor, Kyle Katarn. There is more than a little hero worship going on there, as well as admiration for his partner Jan Ors - a rebel operative and pilot whom Mal can empathize with. This is her first connection to a surrogate family in her lifetime.

Perhaps owing to her past, her belief in the Jedi being a stanchion of justice and help for the oppressed and weak is very strong. Her belief in the mission of the Jedi Order and the good the Jedi can do in the galaxy is as tough as durasteel - and this imbues her with a sense of purpose that keeps her from falling back on old ways.
